My coworker has been obsessing over getting the perfect used Grand Cherokee for about 6 months now. He has seen countless examples, done dozens of test drives and almost bought at least three different ones during his search.
He basically wanted this:
I had asked if he considered other vehicles, like an Explorer, etc. He basically had wanted something "not soccer mom-ish" and could tow his trailer for the occasional landscaping job.
He bought this (GIS though) last week:
Nice car, of course, but not what I had expected. Smaller for sure. Didn't know it could tow anything. Will save him on gas. Better deal than the Jeep. Feels like "a rocketship."
But I can't help but feel he may sold out. I need to figure out how this change of heart happened...
Still, like I said, not a bad car by any stretch of the imagination but just the opposite of what I expected from him.
(It's not soccer mom-ish, which is a dumb assessment of a car, right?)

I thought this was the perfect used Cherokee:

I really hate that some adults can't get past the idea of something as silly as a preconceived image about a car. What, are you not man (woman) enough to drive something you like because someone might think a certain thing about you? weak sauce.

I can't imagine a 4-cylinder crossover being rated to tow more than 1,000-1,500 lbs.

I think its 1500 lbs for the CX5 if I remember. This class used to be able to tow more but manufactures wised up when they realized no one actually does town with these, and if they do, its never more than 1500 lbs or so (obviously some people do/did, but it was small numbers). Subaru dropped their forester rating from 2400 lbs to 1500. Its kinda smart, because you can get better suspension calibrations if you are factoring in high tongue loads and such.

The idea that one would avoid getting a wagon or crossover because they're "lame", and go buy a Corolla instead, just boggles my mind.

I used to have strong feelings about these kinds of perceptions, but my dad taught me in my formative car years that its the man that makes the car and not the other way around. He drove it all, from old Buick skyhawks and supercharged 454 suburbans to 1st gen rav4 and prius. Aint care.

He had a mid-2000s Grand Cherokee that he loved and wanted an update. All he talked about for months.
Then he shot me an email Friday and I was like, hmm...right then. He was so focused that when I suggested things he had some excuse. He must have test driven other things as well, I believe he did at least, but still caught me off guard.

Without any knowledge at all I assume it is more than a slight difference in capabilities.

It's so true, though. If a car fits your needs, the rest shouldn't matter. You would think that these notions would go away with the trending "appliance" approach to cars, but they don't.

Would've picked the GC. Wonder what scared him off.

He said he had some horror stories...one involving a mint looking GC that he was going to drop money on but as soon as they opened the doors "it smelled like a dead body was in there." They had to turn around on the test drive because the salesman couldn't handle it.
He said "he'll never buy used again" after some of the things he went through so I guess it may have been a knee jerk reaction, perhaps?

Assuming he never goes off road and only ever has to pull a light utility trailer, the Mazda was probably the better and much less costly vehicle for him.
Did he get it with a manual or the automatic?

I can't imagine him being offroad but I do think his family has a small boat...not sure what size though. Regardless, auto. He's not one to drive a manual. Aside from aesthetics a car is transportation to him. It'll serve him well.

Tow rating is actually 2000 pounds... which I think should be fine as long as the trailer has its own brakes.

My old PT Cruiser was rated to tow as much as 3500 pounds in Europe when sold with the diesel engine and towing a trailer with brakes.
With the 2.4L gas engine, it was rated to tow a 2500 pound braked trailer.
In North America, it was only rated to tow a 1000 pound unbraked trailer.
Based on my experience of driving a heavily loading down the PT Cruiser I had, I'm 100% sure it was capable of towing a 2000 pound braked trailer. And that wouldn't even be pushing it.

The biggest issue with the boat is driving up a slippery ramp. If it has AWD, then it should be fine... provided it's a small boat, the boat + trailer doesn't weigh more than 2000 pounds and the trailer has brakes (if it's over 1000 pounds).

1500-2000 is usually the max limit states have before you have to have brakes. I towed a full 2500 lbs with the forester once, it had all the power and gearing in the world to get up to and maintain speed, but stopping was...um...scary.

I believe it's just a small boat and trailer, if they still have it. No idea on any specifics but maybe that played into the decision. I'll have to find out more in the new year to satisfy my curiosity.

The man makes the car. I think that's a very appropriate Oppo slogan.
